HISTORY

The Bushman Heritage Museum

We offer a unique museum of contemporary art made by living Bushman. On display we have a permanent collection of stunning tapestries made by local Bushman artists at the Bethesda Arts Centre. These Tapestries explores the ancient wisdom of |Xam Bushman Creation Mythology. You will experience a vivid journey into the story of how the rich mythology and culture of the Bushmen was saved from extinction. You will get the opportunity to meet the artists, see them working, and purchase prints and textiles. This project supporting and run by the local indigenous community was established to empower people of mixed Bushman descents.

The Bushman Heritage museum is part of a Community Project, Bethesda Arts Centre, supported and run by Local indigenous Artists from the Community of Nieu Bethesda. This quirky Centre, with its medieval tower, gothic doors, round river-stone courtyard, and large modern galleries full of stunning artwork is an astonishing find in the dusty off-beat dorp in the depths of the Karoo. The Project is heavily dependent on the income we are able to generate to fund our charitable work through running tourist accommodation and a tourist restaurant, and through entrance fees to the museum.
